The video shows scenes of widespread looting, damaged businesses and unrest, implying that the footage was recorded during recent anti-illegal immigration marches held across South Africa.
But is the video authentic?
Using Google reverse image search on keyframes from the video, we found videos with similar features published on X (formerly Twitter) and the BBC.
The BBC reported that the footage showed unrest and looting that occurred at a Durban mall in July 2021, following the imprisonment of former South African President Jacob Zuma.
Using the above information, we performed a keyword search on YouTune and found a similar video published by News24. The publication posted the clip on 12 July 2021 and reported that it showed looters invading Watercrest Mall in Durban.
Sky News and Daily Mail also covered the incident, reporting on the widespread looting, violence and deployment of the South African National Defence Force following Zuma’s imprisonment.
